In the early 1980s, John Haye, co-owner of Celestial Seasonings Tea company, bought the cave for roughly $150,000. His plan? Turn it into a Cold War bomb shelter! When excavation began, workers discovered bootleggers’ moonshine equipment from the Prohibition era, mostly intact.

Next came the nightclub phase. On opening day, Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Jackson and Sylvester Stallone reportedly arrived by helicopter whilst locals watched from a distance. The cave later operated as a bordello before someone finally decided to transform it into the 5,800-square-foot lodge that exists today.
Construction cost? Over $6 million..!
Jesse James Slept Here (Probably)
Historical accounts indicate that Jesse James and his gang used this specific cave as a hideout whilst moving through the northwest Ozarks during their outlaw years.
The location made it practically invisible to anyone who didn’t know where to look.
Now, you too can sleep in the same geological formation that once sheltered one of America’s most notorious criminals (Jesse James we meant, not Michael Jackson!) The cave naturally maintains temperatures around 18°C year-round, but fair warning: drips happen. You’re inside a functioning cave system after all.
Luxury Carved Into Stone
The lodge features custom-built furniture, a 72-inch smart TV and a natural rock formation waterfall called the “Spanish Piano” that cascades spring water into pooling rock basins in the living room.
The property uses mineral water from a natural underground spring that flows from deep inside the cave under the floor and emerges near the deck. It’s safe for both showering and drinking via a self-cleaning purification system.
