WOOLLY MAMMOTH GENES: Scientists Just Grew 5cm Monster Hair On Mice Using 13,000-Year-Old DNA

Alex Hedger

Reading Time:

Bizarre But True! Scientists have genetically engineered mice to grow thick, golden-brown hair that reaches up to 5 centimetres long.  The hair looks uncannily like extinct woolly mammoth fur. Because it basically is…

Researchers at Colossal Biosciences identified seven genes responsible for mammoth hair growth, then made eight simultaneous genetic edits to regular mice. The editing efficiency hit 100% in some cases, producing hair growth three times longer than normal mice.

The Computational Challenge Nobody Talks About

Asian elephants share 99.6% of their DNA with mammoths. Which sounds close.

But, it’s not.  The gap between elephants and mammoths is actually 96.4% identical at the genome level. That remaining difference represents a whopping 13 million changes to the DNA sequence!

To figure out which genes mattered for mammoth traits, researchers analysed 59 woolly, Columbian, and steppe mammoth genomes ranging from 3,500 to over 1,200,000 years old. That’s ‘computational archaeology’ on an impressive scale.

But Why Mice Instead Of Elephants?

The practical answer is speed and ethics.

Mice reproduce quickly. Elephants take 22 months to gestate and live for decades. Testing genetic modifications on elephants would be slow, expensive and ethically complicated.

The woolly mice prove the genetic pathway works. The hair genes function. The edits are precise.  But here’s the thing nobody’s found yet: a viable mammoth cell.

Despite decades of searching frozen tundra, no living mammoth cell has ever been recovered. Most scientists doubt any cell could survive that kind of deep freeze. That’s why the cloning route stays theoretical – at least whilst genetic engineering moves forward.

The Weird Elephant Cancer Connection

Elephants almost never get cancer.  This is bizarre as elephants have thousands more cells than humans. More cells should mean more cancer risk.

But it doesn’t happen that way.  The answer sits in their genes. The same genes researchers are now learning to read and edit for mammoth de-extinction might unlock medical breakthroughs for humans too if links are found the explain lower rates of mutations in some animals and not others.

That’s the hidden value in this research. It’s not just about bringing back extinct animals. It’s about understanding genetic mechanisms that could solve other modern problems too.

What This Actually Means For De-Extinction

The woolly mice represent a proof of concept, not a ‘Jurassic Park’ style resurrection.  Even if researchers successfully edit every mammoth gene into an elephant embryo, the result would be an elephant-mammoth hybrid with no more than 1% mammoth genes. And that’s not a mammoth, it’s an elephant wearing mammoth traits…

The last woolly mammoths died around 4,000 years ago. The pyramids of Giza were already ancient when the final mammoths walked the earth. The genetic distance between then and now isn’t just about DNA sequences. It’s about lost cellular machinery, extinct microbiomes and environmental contexts that no longer exist.

The Real Breakthrough

Forget the mammoth narrative for a second.  What these researchers demonstrated is multiplex genome editing at unprecedented precision. Eight simultaneous edits. 100% efficiency. Predictable outcomes.

And that’s the actual story. The technology to rewrite genetic code with this level of control opens doors far beyond extinct megafauna.

Where This Goes Next…?

Colossal Biosciences isn’t stopping at mice…

The computational analysis confirmed these genetic pathways as crucial targets for mammoth de-extinction attempts. The next phase involves scaling the edits up to elephant cells, then potentially to embryos.

Whether that produces something recognisable as a mammoth remains unknown. But the genetic engineering precision required to try, is now demonstrably real…

Curious About Your Own DNA..?

You can now test your own DNA to discover your ancestry and DNA traits. Order a home kit below to take a simple cheek swab that’s sent off for lab analysis. The results will give you insights to the movements of your distant ancestors and might uncover exciting hidden secrets about your own origins. (We guarantee that you won’t be cloned from a Wooly Mammoth though..!)
