Picture this: you’re sitting down to breakfast in one of Nairobi’s most elegant manor houses, buttering your toast, when a giraffe pokes its head through the window. Not metaphorically. An actual giraffe, with a twenty-inch purple tongue, politely requesting a share of your morning meal…

This isn’t a one-off wildlife encounter or a lucky sighting. This is every single morning at Giraffe Manor, where the world’s most endangered giraffe subspecies wanders freely through manicured gardens and guests become part of one of conservation’s most remarkable success stories!

The Love Story That Saved A Species

The story begins in 1974, when Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville fell in love with a crumbling manor house in Langata, a leafy suburb of Nairobi. But they weren’t just buying a beautiful property, they were answering an urgent call.

Bizarre But True! The Rothschild’s giraffe population collapsed from 2,000 animals in 1960 to barely 130 by the early 1970s, victims of civil war, habitat loss and humanity’s relentless expansion.

Rather than watch an entire subspecies disappear, the Leslie-Melvilles transformed their manor into a breeding sanctuary. Betty, who would become known as “The Giraffe Lady,” dedicated her life to nurturing these magnificent creatures back from the brink. Today, largely thanks to their pioneering work, over 700 Rothschild’s giraffes roam wild across Kenya and Uganda.

Your Room Comes With Resident Giraffes

Giraffe Manor isn’t your typical luxury hotel. Yes, you’ll find elegant colonial-era architecture, sumptuous rooms filled with period furniture and impeccable service. But you’ll also find something that no other hotel on earth can offer: a herd of Rothschild’s giraffes who consider the property their home too.

The experience is breathtaking in its simplicity. During breakfast and afternoon tea, the giraffes approach the manor’s distinctive arched windows. They’re not performing or being coerced, they’re genuinely curious, habituated to human presence after decades of gentle interaction. Guests feed them specially prepared pellets whilst those impossibly long tongues wrap around treats with surprising delicacy!

It’s important to understand these aren’t domesticated animals. They’re wild giraffes who’ve learnt that humans at this particular manor mean food at predictable times. They’ll absolutely headbutt an inattentive guest and they leave again the moment they’ve decided they’re done!

Why Everyone Wants To Stay

Here’s the challenge: Giraffe Manor has only twelve rooms. And they’re often booked solid a year or more in advance, sometimes within hours of becoming available!

Sadly, the property can’t expand without compromising the very thing that makes it special. Too many guests would stress the giraffes, damage the habitat and undermine decades of careful work. The waiting list exists because the mission matters more than maximising revenue.

But here’s the beautiful part: your stay directly funds ongoing conservation work. Every night you spend here supports breeding programmes, habitat protection and local education initiatives. You’re not just ticking off a bucket list item – you’re genuinely participating in species survival.

What Makes This Journey Unforgettable?

Imagine waking in a four-poster bed in a room that overlooks the gardens where giraffes graze in the early morning mist. You take your coffee on the terrace as the sun rises over Nairobi, and a giraffe ambles over to investigate.

Later, during breakfast in the dining room, another giraffe stretches its neck through the window and you’re feeding this majestic creature by hand whilst finishing your eggs.

Beyond the giraffe encounters, the manor itself is a masterpiece of Kenyan colonial architecture, lovingly restored and maintained. The gardens are spectacular, the staff are genuinely warm and the attention to detail is impeccable.

You’ll dine on exceptional food, sleep in absolute comfort and spend your days in one of the most peaceful corners of a bustling city.

How To Make It Happen

Booking Giraffe Manor requires patience and planning. Rooms are released approximately 12 months in advance and you’ll need to be ready the moment they become available. Set calendar reminders, prepare your dates and act quickly when bookings open!

So start planning now and prepare to book the moment rooms become available. Because breakfast with a giraffe isn’t just a travel experience—it’s a once-in-a-lifetime encounter and bizarrely magical experience!
